Chicago Booth for Veterans

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Booth and the armed forces go well together. Booth is a perennial powerhouse in the MBA rankings. With a number of Nobel laureates from the Economics department, this is a school known for their quant work, focus on data, and deep research into economics and the fields of business. If you want to go into a traditional post-MBA career such as consulting or investment banking, Booth is a great fit.

Few key stats about Booth (Class of 2021):

  • Rankings: 2019- Forbes (1), Economist (1), US News and World Report (ties for 3rd with HBS)
  • Class size: 593
  • Average GPA: 3.6 (2.7-4.0 range)
  • Average Age: 28
  • Average GMAT: 730 (610-790 range)
  • With GRE: 13%

As part of my personal analysis for each school, I also really tried to look at their Veteran’s Club. The Booth Armed Forces Group has one of the more robust web presences of the clubs out there, detailing everything from how they help you as an applicant to where around Chicago you can get Veteran discounts.

Booth also has some serious advantages to Veterans. The school made a determined effort starting in 2006 to bring more Veterans into their program, resulting in a 300% increase in the amount of admits. This shouldn’t be a huge surprise. Every school or employer started to see Veterans coming back from OIF and OEF and knew that they wanted to snag up our leadership and teamwork skills. Business schools, especially, saw the opportunity to bring experienced leaders into their classes and knew they had to do something about it.

  • Waived admission fee. (Ok, basically every school does this)
  • Yellow Ribbon Program: No cap on the number of awards, but does cap individual award at $30k/year from the school
  • David W. Fox scholarship, awarded to a single veteran
  • Harper Family Foundation donation which provided $10 million to support veterans attending Booth

Booth is a fantastic school. Some people will really harp on going to school in a market that you know you want to live and work, but going to a school like Booth gives you a name brand, education, and alumni base that is incredible and highly transportable. Just make sure you don’t mind the cold before you decide to go. Reach out to the Booth Armed Forces Group to learn more.
